Police Search For Man Who Stalked, Attacked Jogger

Woman, 30, Was Running South On Florida Street Near University Avenue At 6:20 AM

Police are searching Saturday for a man who stalked and attacked a woman jogging near Balboa Park, said San Diego police Sgt. Ray Battrick.

The woman received minor scrapes and bruises, but did not need medical treatment, he said.

A 30-year-old woman was running south on Florida Street near University Avenue at 6:20 a.m. when she noticed a man watching her, Battrick said.

The man started chasing the woman near Myrtle Avenue and Florida Street, Battrick said. The woman screamed and ran into the street, where the man jumped on top of her.

Neighbors who heard the screaming came outside, and one man chased the attacker but lost sight of him, Battrick said.

Psychiatrist Michael Mantell said the suspect is behaving like a typical psychopathic stalker.

"He probably had no relationship with the victim other than he happened to be in some way obsessed with her," said Mantell.

Dr. Mantell said these types of stalkers are usually lonely, violent people with anger management issues who often abuse drugs.

Mantell is convinced the man will strike again.

"If you see something unusual, say something," said Mantell. "Don't say, 'I'm sure it's nothing.' Call police and say 'I have an uneasy feeling about a guy hanging around the park this morning,' especially in San Diego when we have seen so much of this happening."

Police also believe the man is still in the area.

The man is Hispanic, between 20 and 30 years old, 5 feet-10 inches tall and weighs 250 pounds, Battrick said. He was wearing a black bandanna around his mouth, a white t-shirt and blue jeans.
