350 Pot Plants Found Growing On City Land

Marijuana Plants Worth As Much As $1.4 Million

Authorities Thursday are investigating who is responsible for growing 350 marijuana plants worth as much as $1.4 million in a North County grove owned by the city of San Diego.

Members of the San Diego County Narcotics Task Force, which includes federal and local law enforcement agents, seized the plants from an area just south of the Westfield North County Shopping Mall in Escondido early Wednesday.

San Diego owns the 40-acre property and leases it out to Big Trees Nursery Inc., a tree-growing company that leases part of the land to Evergreen Nursery. Neither company was suspected of being involved in the pot-growing operation, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

The marijuana was planted 100 yards from Highland Valley Road, off Pomerado Road, and was said to be hidden by overgrown brush and trees.
