Downtown San Diego Prepares For Comic-Con Blitz

4-Day Convention Begins Thursday

Downtown San Diego residents and businesses are bracing themselves for all things Comic-Con this week, but 10News learned not everyone is willing to throw out the welcome mat.

  • 10News Poll: San Diegans Weigh In On Comic-Con
  • Special Section: Comic-Con 2010
  • Experts said 130,000 people are expected to attend the annual convention, and that number may be a goldmine for tourism and business officials.

However, the number of attendees could also be a nightmare for employees who work or live downtown.

The annual comic book and entertainment convention is expected to generate $163 million for the local economy, including local restaurants. The staff at Toscana in the Gaslamp Quarter estimated it will more than double its daily revenue.

"It will probably bring us around $15,000 a day," said Toscana manager Dondi Kelley.

While the conventioneers dressed like characters like Wolverine and Darth Vader are expected to spend money, they may also wreak havoc on downtown traffic and parking.

Some employees of downtown businesses told 10News they planned on adding an hour to their commute just to make sure they get to work on time. They also expected to pay more for parking once they got downtown.

"I pay $5 a day for parking now, but it's probably going to shoot up to like $30, I would think," hostess Frances King said.

In a scientific 10News poll, about 48 percent of San Diegans intend to avoid the downtown area when Comic-Con opens. Of those avoiding the area, 57 percent blame the traffic, 14 percent wanted to avoid the crowds and 9 percent wanted to avoid the people dressed as Star Wars Stormtroopers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Surprisingly, most of the downtown residents 10News spoke with Tuesday are looking forward to the colorful crowds that will descend on the Gaslamp Quarter for the 4-day convention.

"I like it. I like the excitement of it," downtown resident Aimee Crowell said.

"After you lived here a few years you get used to it," downtown resident Fran Branciforte said.
