SAN DIEGO -- Alexia Esquer, 21, was walking along the sand in waist-high water when she felt the barbs pierce her foot, one right after the other. The stings were so severe she has not stopped bleeding since she was stung around 3 p.m. on Wednesday."It was too much pain to handle, so I was just, like, yelling and yelling," said Esquer. "I told my friend I can't feel my leg anymore. It's burning."Esquer has two puncture wounds on the top of her right foot from two different stingray barbs."When I was in the ambulance, the bed was full of blood. And today, I'm still bleeding," she told 10News.Lifeguards also had Esquer immediately place her foot in a bucket of hot water to combat the painful stingray venom. However, she was losing blood at a fast rate."I put [my] foot in the water … [water] turned red … changed it, [and] it turned to red again and again," Esquer said. "They were asking me, 'How do you feel on a scale of 1 to 10?' I just said, '10.' That's the most pain I've ever felt."She was transported to the hospital, given morphine for the pain and released several hours later. She is taking heavy-duty antibiotics to prevent infection.Esquer said the stinging incident was an experience that has completely changed her view of the ocean."I love the ocean, but I would be scared to go in the ocean again," she said.
