It has been one year since David Westerfield was convicted of kidnapping and killing 7-year-old Danielle van Dam, 10News reported.

A six-man, six-woman jury reached its verdict after two months of testimony and 10 days of deliberation.

They pronounced Westerfield guilty on three charges of first-degree murder with special circumstances, kidnapping, and possession of child pornography.

During the penalty phase of the trial Westerfield received the death penalty.

The trial captivated much of San Diego, with local television, Internet and radio stations broadcasting gavel-to-gavel coverage.

Danielle's mother, Brenda van Dam, spoke with 10News Thursday and said that they are moving from the Sabre Springs home where Danielle was abducted.

"I know I need to do it. Our move is giving the family a fresh start and privacy," van Dam said.

Westerfield currently sits in a drab cell on death row at San Quentin state prison. He occasionally has visitors of family, friends, lawyers and perhaps a writer or filmmaker, according to 10News.

He has written several letters since his conviction, protesting his innocence and his treatment in prison.

"I hope he's suffering, living on daily basis with memory of her murder," van Dam said.
