SAN DIEGO -- Five municipalities, San Diego County and UC San Diego were collectively awarded more than $3.4 million in grants Thursday by the California Office of Traffic Safety, primarily for programs to prevent drinking and driving.

The grants were among $67 million awarded by the OTS statewide for traffic safety programs.

The money is intended to give state, county and local agencies the funding to combat impaired driving, encourage seat belt and child safety seat use, for campaigns to prevent distracted driving, to enhance medical response, stop aggressive driving and promote motorcycle, pedestrian and bicycle safety programs.

"We have come a long way in California over the last four years," said Christopher Murphy, director of the OTS. "Every category of traffic fatality and injury has seen remarkable improvements. These grants will keep that momentum going."

The local recipients of the traffic safety grants are:

San Diego, $438,000, for a DUI enforcement and awareness program

Chula Vista, $273,215, for a DUI enforcement and awareness program

Chula Vista, $486,539, for repeat DUI offender prosecution

Escondido, $250,000, for a DUI enforcement and awareness program

Oceanside, $261, 597, for a DUI enforcement and awareness program

La Mesa, $123,000, for a DUI enforcement and awareness program

San Diego County, $400,000, for a DUI enforcement and awareness program

San Diego County, $575,000, for probation supervision of repeat DUI offenders

San Diego County, $200,000, for a Keep'Em Safe program

UCSD, $425,719, for law enforcement and health professionals training for age-related driving disorders
