Local Authorities Promise July 4 DUI Crackdown

Last July 4 Weekend, 30 DUI-Related Deaths, 363 Related Injuries Reported In State

Area law enforcement officers will crack down on drunken drivers during the July 4 holiday weekend that begins Friday night.

The San Diego Police Department is teaming with the county Sheriff's Department and California Highway Patrol for two DUI checkpoints during the three-day weekend. They will also conduct roving saturation patrols, in which officers flood an area to look for impaired drivers.

"Driving while drunk isn't worth the tremendous risk," SDPD Chief Bill Lansdowne said. "No matter your age, if you've had too much holiday spirit, you'd better find a safe and sober ride home or your chances of arrest are high."

Checkpoints and other crackdowns are planned in Chula Vista, Oceanside and Escondido.

Last year, 88 people were arrested for DUI by CHP officers during the Independence Day holiday period in San Diego County, down by about one-third from 2008. No one died on local roadways.
