A 40-year-old bus driver for the North County Transit District is locked up in Vista Wednesday for being drunk on the job, a sheriff's sergeant said.

David Joseph Costello was arrested in the 400 block of Encinitas Boulevard about 4:25 p.m. Tuesday for suspicion of driving a commercial vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, sheriff's Sgt. Thomas Yancey said.

"We take this allegation seriously, and we will be very aggressive in investigating and taking whatever action is necessary to prevent a reoccurrence of this event," said NCTD Executive Director Matt Tucker in a prepared statement.

Deputies went to the location based on a tip, Yancey said. Costello was arrested after failing a series of field sobriety tests, according to the sergeant.

Costello is employed by First Transit, a NCTD contractor. At the time of his arrest, Costello was driving Route 309, from Oceanside to Encinitas.
