SAN DIEGO -- Dozens of San Diegans hit the road on Friday, bound for Phoenix to join thousands of others to protest Arizona’s new immigration law. They railed in Chicano Park on Friday, with signs and supplies, ready to pursue one goal: repeal SB 1070.“Especially for the Latino community, we feel it's a personal attack on our community,” said Abel Macias of the May 1st Coalition group. The Arizona immigration law will require police to check the residency status of anyone being investigated for a crime during a traffic stop if they feel the person is here illegally. The group will hold up a banner while marching to the state capitol, joining Los Angelenos and an estimated crowd of 50,000 in Phoenix on Saturday for the “National Day of Action against SB 1070.”They’re also planning to boycott Arizona’s economy by bringing their own food and water, sleeping in a local church and getting gas before reaching the state line.“Can’t buy anything in Arizona,” said a protestor.Former U.S. Attorney Pete Nunez said the law is an extension of federal law, which already requires non-citizens to carry their documents at all times. He said there was a need for better enforcement of resident status and heightened border protection.“The Arizona law is sort of a last ditch effort, if you will, on the part of the people in Arizona to save themselves since the federal government won't do it,” said Nunez.Others like David Morales, a student, pointed to what they called racism in a law they consider inherently unjust.“It's something that affects all of us,” said Morales. “We're all family and injustice against some is injustice against everyone.”
