Group Attempts To Put Out Del Mar Fair, La Jolla Fireworks

Coastal Environmental Rights Foundation Says Fireworks Shows Harm Environment

The man who tried to shut down fireworks on San Diego Bay is now challenging fireworks displays at the Del Mar Fair and La Jolla Cove.

Del Mar's Fourth of July fireworks show caps off the Del Mar Fair's summer run, but Marco Gonzalez with the Coastal Environmental Rights Foundation said the show is harming the environment.

"What we do know is chemicals in fireworks are highly toxic and dangerous to the environment and humans," said Gonzalez.

Gonzalez said recent wildlife habitat restoration efforts at the wetlands next to the fairgrounds make the Del Mar fireworks display more of a threat to the area.

"These are all environmentally sensitive habitat areas that require special mitigation measures, and I'm certain they have not take those into account," said Gonzalez.

Fair officials refused comment, and a representative told 10News they've not been contacted about any environmental challenges and that they have all required firework permits.

But the fair can expect a letter similar to what was sent to La Jolla Cove fireworks organizers, which called the show a violation of the Clean Water Act, Water Quality Control Plan and the Coastal Act.

Gonzalez said he does not believe the fireworks show can ever take place at the La Jolla Cove legally and that the environmental impact can't be mitigated.

Some local residents said they don't want to see the shows canceled, but they would like to know if there really is an environmental impact.

Solana Beach resident Pete Wiester told 10News, "If they can produce studies that have taken place on the environmental impact of fireworks, I think they should go ahead and do that before they try and make things stop."

Gonzalez said his group will work with fireworks organizers to come up with a plan.
