Support Services RV Helps Families of Deployed

While the pace of deployments to meet the demands of war in Iraq and Afghanistan puts a huge strain on San Diego military families, the military is offering mobile support in an RV.

Two years ago, Michelle McNight was at Eucalyptus Ridge, a military housing complex in Lakeside. She was packing up to move again, which her daughter Haleigh was dreading.

“I have to make all new friends and I have to learn all these new things and it’s so hard,” she said.

Deena Daniels is new to Eucalyptus Ridge after leaving everything she knew behind in Texas.

“It was church family and friends that’d we’d known for ten years so people who loved my children just like family,” said Daniels.

Military families move every two to four years, but for McNight and Daniels is they can get support from the RV that carries support services for military families. Typically, the support services for military families are on base. Six permanent facilities are at every base and three offices are in different neighborhoods, but the RV is a first.

Eucalyptus Ridge is 24 miles from the nearest base but one of 31 different military housing districts in the county.

Family services will hit the road in the RV and stay for a month at each complex.

Daniels’ husband is about to deploy, but there’s a lot to do cover before he goes.

“She gave me a little pamphlet about how to prepare when he's gone and a little video for my daughter for when my dad leaves,” said Daniels.

At the RV’s last stop in Serra Mesa, the support services RV saw 106 different families come in for help.
