A small earthquake, with a preliminary magnitude estimated at 3.1, rocked the San Gorgonio Pass near Palm Springs Sunday, and was reportedly felt across North County.

Automated seismographs operated by the USGS and local universities placed the epicenter three miles northeast of Cabazon, about 45 miles northeast of Bonsall.

Ninety people registered that they felt a small shaking motion on the USGS reporting Web page, and most of them were in Palm Springs. The quake was widely felt in North County, USGS said, and was felt as far away as El Cajon.

Nancy Obpsteade, who works at the venerable Hadley's fruit stand in Cabazon, said she did not feel it. "I heard about it, business here is normal," she said.

A 3.1 quake is not expected to cause any damage, according to seismologists at the Southern California Earthquake Center.
