SAN DIEGO -- A movement has begun online to change the name of Rancho Bernardo Community Park to Chelsea King Memorial Park. There is currently a Facebook page where people are giving their input about renaming the park for Chelsea. Some are opposed, but most seem to think it would be an appropriate remembrance.Mira wrote, "It's the least the community can do for such a special girl."
"This way she will always be remembered even after we are all gone," wrote Carrie. In Sabre Springs, there is a park of remembrance. It honors victims of violent crime, including Cara Knott, who was murdered near the area in 1986 by California Highway Patrolman Craig Peyer. It is located on Cara Way, right below the Knott Memorial Bridge."Is it hard to come here?" asked 10News' Hal Clement."It is. You know, once I'm here, I do get some peace from it," said Joyce Knott, Cara's mother. She said she is glad it's here for her daughter."It would make her happy to see that something nice was here," said Knott. Many people refer to the park as Cara Knott Memorial Park, but it is not."We wanted it to be a place for peace for all victims of violent crime," said Knott.Knott, of course, knows about the Chelsea King case."It's heartbreaking. Absolutely heartbreaking," said Knott. As for naming a park after Chelsea, she thinks that should be completely up to the family."I do think it's awfully early for the family to be making any kind of decision," said Knott.Knott wears a necklace with a cameo of Cara. It's still hard, 23 years after her daughter's death."You don’t forget. You don't let it go. You don't close it," said Knott.Knott said she has not spoken to the King family, but would be glad to if they are interested. As for renaming the park, city officials told 10News nothing will happen without input from the family.Any renaming would be a decision by the Park and Recreation Department Board.
