High School Student Tests Positive For TB

SAN DIEGO -- A student at Granite Hills High School in El Cajon tested positive for tuberculosis, prompting San Diego County health officials Friday to notify some students, faculty and staff there that may have been exposed.The infected student last attended classes on March 8, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency."HHSA is working with school officials to provide TB testing to those who may have been exposed," said Dr. Dean Sidelinger, the county's deputy public health officer. Not all of the school's staff or students has been alerted, only those who may have had contact with the pupil.
Most people who are exposed to tuberculosis don't develop the disease, according to the HHSA.There have been 25 cases of tuberculosis in San Diego County so far this year, according to the HHSA. In 2009, there were 223 cases of tuberculosis reported in the region.
