Study: Toyota Still Dependable Car Brand Despite Problems

Despite recent troubles, a new study out Thursday said Toyota is still one of the most dependable brands of cars on the market.

Showrooms around San Diego County and across the country have seen less traffic in light of the recent recalls, but Toyota hopes the new study will help bring customers back.

"We're not trying to be shy about it … as far as we're open to the fact that, 'Look, we're going to fix these problems,'" said Toyota representative Christian Coburn

Major issues with Toyota's acceleration and brakes have been linked to more than 50 deaths, including a crash in Santee last August that killed a California Highway Patrol officer, his wife, daughter and brother-in-law.

The problems prompted the company to recall about 8.5 million vehicles worldwide, and Toyota sales dropped by 9 percent last month.

"The bottom line is that Toyota is going to come back from this. We'll be fine," said Coburn.

In the midst of the company's problems, a new study released by J.D. Power and Associates gives new hope to the company and names some Toyota models among the most dependable on the market.

In the study, 52,200 car owners were asked about their experiences with their vehicles. In the end, Toyota owners reported fewer problems compared to other brands. Five Toyota models, including the Prius, ranked first. Many Toyota owners 10News spoke to said they are not surprised by the study's results.

Toyota customer Lucille Wagemann said, "I'm not concerned about it. I'm sure that they're going to find what's wrong."

Dealerships across the country and have been working hard to shake the stigma by offering aggressive incentives to try and win back buyers.

The automaker said their efforts appear to be working, as March sales are already up 30 percent compared to last year.

Local dealers said they hope similar studies will add to their efforts to give customers the confidence they need to come back.
