SAN DIEGO -- Two unemployed East County men are behind bars Thursday on suspicion of robbing a 95-year-old Lakeside woman after following her home from a home-improvement store.Investigators believe John Barnaba, 47, and Jonathan Dwayne Williams, 48, targeted the senior citizen after spotting her at a Home Depot in El Cajon on March 9, sheriff's Sgt. Tom Poulin said. The 4-foot-8-inch victim had just returned to her Linroe Drive residenceabout 12:30 that afternoon and was taking purchases out of the trunk of her car inside her garage when Williams -- who is 6-foot-6 and weighs roughly 210 pounds -- ran up and snatched her purse out of her hand, Poulin alleged. The bandit then grabbed the woman's wallet, which she was holding in herother hand, and pulled it away following a brief struggle, after which he ran to a waiting car and was driven out of the area, according to the sergeant."She was not hurt, but she was startled by it all," he said.Over the next several days, detectives identified Barnaba and Williams as the alleged perpetrators through surveillance video -- including footage of a man using a credit card belonging to the victim at a convenience store about 20 minutes after the robbery -- and statements from witnesses to the crime.Barnaba, the suspected getaway driver, was arrested Monday as he wasbeing evicted from the El Cajon trailer park where he lived. Deputies arrested Williams two days later as he slept in his car outside a Spring Valley apartment complex where he sometimes stayed with friends, Poulin said. The alleged thieves were booked into county jail on suspicion of robbery, burglary, credit theft and elder abuse. Each is being held on $100,000 bail.Barnaba is scheduled to be arraigned Friday and Williams on Monday, both at the El Cajon courthouse.
