Man Arrested After Escaping Police Car, Scaling Hotel
Authorities Say Man Was Wanted In Connection With Other Crime

SAN DIEGO -- A man who escaped police custody and fled to a downtown San Diego hotel was arrested after a bizarre pursuit.The incident was reported shortly before 4 p.m. at the Doubletree Hotel on 1646 Front Street.Authorities told 10News Andrew Collins was wanted in connection with the robbery of a convenience store several weeks ago. He was in the custody of El Cajon police, but was able to free himself by kicking out a window of the police car he was riding in. An officer shot Collins several times with a Taser, but he still managed to escape with his handcuffs on.
The Front Street off ramp to southbound Interstate 5 was closed while police searched for Collins.Collins entered the hotel and witnesses said he was able to jump from one balcony to another and scaled parts of the building.Authorities said he reached the 14th floor where he allegedly knocked on several doors until a woman opened.The woman told authorities she ran out of the room but saw something tucked in his waistband.During the pursuit, Collins stole a coat from a man attending a meeting inside the hotel and attempted to pass as a guest evacuating the building. However, several guests pushed Collins away and authorities were able to take him into custody.Medics treated Collins for some type of arm injuries following the chase and took him away in an ambulance.No other injuries were reported.Collins is being held at downtown's Central Jail on $100,000 bail.
