Sex Offender Arrested In Sheriff's Dept. Sweep

10News Is There As Deputies Audit 60 Sex Offenders Living In Santee

A team of San Diego County Sheriff's Department deputies and parole agents made surprise visits to the homes of 60 of the 80 sex offenders who live in Santee Wednesday morning as part of an audit.

The sheriff's department said the goal was to check for any parole violations and to make sure that the sex offenders are actually living where they report to law enforcement that they are living.

One of the sex offenders visited was Anthony Gross, who sat quietly with a GPS device strapped to his ankle as deputies searched his home or any drugs, pornography or anything else that would violate the conditions of his parole.

"Anything changed? Now is the time to tell us," Det. Miguel Baca of the SAFE Task Force asked Gross.

"No, nothing's changed," Gross replied.

The deputies found marijuana that belonged to Gross' adult daughter, and she was cited.

"It's a little amount, but it's a citable offense," explained Sheriff's Deputy Bo Roberson.

Deputies noticed drinking glasses that picture naked women -- sexual images that parolee sex offenders can't have.

Gross was silent as agents handcuffed him then walked him to a waiting patrol car.

His daughter was enraged and screamed, "Those aren't even his!"

"The problem is it's the same household," responded a parole agent.

"But that's my room, that's my personal property … get out of my (expletive) house!" the daughter yelled.

The sweep through Santee was planned two months ago and not carried out in reaction to the slaying of Poway teen Chelsea King.

"The big goal is to make the community safe," explained Roberson.

Roberson's plan was to check on 60 of the 80 sex offenders for compliance with Megan's Law and parole conditions.

At one location, the deputies stumbled on disturbing writing.

Roberson asked a man who was convicted for indecent exposure, "Why do you keep journals of all the women you have sex with and date?"

The man explained that the journals dated back to his high school and college days. While they were strange, the journals did not violate his probation.

"He's in compliance with everything; he's got enough common sense to know that," explained Baca.

Using a phone, agents tracked the location of another parolee jailed for child pornography possession.

Inside the man's home, they rummaged through kitchen cabinets and then scanned the DVD's, "Making sure they're not pornographic items," said Roberson.

A black-and-white movie popped up, then old concert videos. Deputies became concerned when they found a picture of a clothed young girl, but they determined it was a family friend.

The parolee agreed to talk to 10News as long as his identity was hidden. He said he knows these kinds of surprise audits are the price for his bad choices.

"I opened myself up to this thing and I think it's fair and I think it will protect the community," he said.
