San Diegans Speak Out Over Health Care Bill

POSTED: 5:18 pm PDT March 16, 2010
UPDATED: 7:20 pm PDT March 16, 2010

The debate over the health care bill played out from Chula Vista to downtown San Diego Tuesday as supporters and opponents took to the streets to make their voices heard.

Close to 200 supporters marched from the Santa Fe Depot to City Hall, and they all felt the time to get something done is now.

"My health insurance went from $176 a month to $376 a month. So like millions of others, I'm going to have to drop my health insurance," said supporter Eric LaGuardia.

Unemployed and without health coverage, Shawn McFarlane is still opposed to the bill. It is a government-run system she said is not the answer.

"If they can make the existing systems work, if they can show how to manage us then I'd say fine, by all means, take care of us," said McFarlane.

Diane Tavarez doesn't like it either, but not because she doesn't think reform is needed. For her, it's about what it will cost.

"So much of it doesn't have anything to do with health care. Now we're throwing the student loan thing … I'm not opposed to the entire bill, but there are things in there that don't belong. We need to start over," said Tavarez.

Supporters like Ammal Mulenberg said citizens are already paying hidden fees and the time for a different way of doing things is at hand.

"More people want reform than don't. We have a system that just doesn't work for us any more," said Mulenberg.

President Obama is hoping to get the bill voted on by the weekend.
