There is no question that 3-D is the hottest trend in movies right now with "Avatar" becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time and "Alice in Wonderland" making $435 million worldwide in just two weeks.

San Diego-based Legend 3D did most of the work on "Alice in Wonderland, turning a movie that was shot in two dimensions into 3-D.

"I've been in the industry for 25 years. I've never seen the industry go in one direction so significantly," said Legend 3D founder and President Barry Sandrew.

Sandrew is not surprised, and he said everyone in the industry knew when "Avatar" was coming out and they knew it would have a major impact.

"Everybody in the industry pretty much knew it was going to be a game changer," said Sandrew.

Sandrew started his company 10 years ago, converting black-and-white films into color. Five years ago, he began working on the process of turning 2-D films into 3-D.

"Alice in Wonderland" has certainly put the company on the map.

"We pretty much anticipated it would do very, very well. We didn't realize it would do as well," said Sandrew.

The next big arena for 3-D is television. All major manufacturers are making 3-D sets, and some analysts expect 75 million 3-D sets to be sold by 2015. Right now, there isn't much content, but experts expect there will be content soon.

"Concerts, plays, opera, you name it. It's all going to be coming into the home theater and the feature film theater," Sandrew said.

Legend 3D's success is good news for the San Diego economy, as the company said they are hiring.

They currently have 120 employees in San Diego now and said they expect to hire another 150 employees.
