Man Trying To Pass Cars Crashes Into Pole

ESCONDIDO, Calif. -- A man was hospitalized Tuesday with serious injuries after he slammed his SUV into a utility pole while attempting to overtake two cars in Escondido, police said.The crash on westbound East Washington Avenue near Date Street was reported at 10:24 p.m. Monday, said Lt. Chris Wynn of the Escondido Police Department.The driver of the SUV suffered a fractured pelvis, femur and ankle, Wynn said, adding that he was expected to survive.Witnesses said two male passengers in the SUV fled the scene before emergency crews arrived, according to Wynn, who said it wasn't clear whether the passengers were injured.Drunken driving was not suspected, the lieutenant said.
