SAN DIEGO -- A travel warning has been issued for Mexico as thousands of local students begin spring break. On Monday, it appeared to be a normal travel day into Mexico at the San Ysidro border crossing. But the deaths of several Americans in the past two days in Mexico have prompted the U.S. government to warn travelers to stay out."We already had plans made, so we're going," said traveler Mark Scibilia.Scibilia and Anne Gerber told 10News they've had plans for a long time to go to Puerta Vallarta Monday and nothing was going to stop them."We've got a vacation planned and we're going to go," said Scibilia.American Consulate family members in six northern Mexico cities were warned to return to the U.S. as a precaution after a U.S. Consulate worker and her American husband were shot to death in broad daylight in Ciudad Juarez. In a separate drive-by shooting on the same day, the Mexican husband of another U.S. Consulate employee was killed. In the beach city of Acapulco, 13 people were killed, including five police officers. With the travel warning coming on the heels of spring break, students who once flocked into Mexico for spring break festivities are opting to stay north of the border instead."I know typically they have done the spring break trips down there. And I know this year they moved it to Havasu, last year to Palm Springs just to stay away from that," said San Diego State University student Ryan Thayer.SDSU student Kathy Wentz said, "I know a guy who owns a house in Tijuana and he won't even go down there right now.""I would be pretty cautious to go if it was me," said SDSU student Andrew De Bell.In response to the latest travel warning, the Baja California government issued a statement that said they have made sure all efforts were being made to make sure the area is safe and that Rosarito Beach should still be safe for visitors.
