CHP: Alcohol Possible Factor In SR-67 Head-On Collision

Suspected DUI Driver Had Infant Son In Back Seat

POSTED: 2:31 pm PST March 12, 2010
UPDATED: 5:45 pm PST March 12, 2010

A head-on collision on State Route 67 near San Vicente Reservoir sent a DUI suspect, his infant son and another motorist to hospitals Friday, authorities reported.

The crash occurred shortly before 2 p.m., when 22-year-old Jason Cooley of Lakeside lost control of his northbound 2007 Chevrolet Impala just south of Foster Truck Trail, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The sedan crossed over a set of double yellow lines and smashed into an oncoming Toyota Yaris, CHP public affairs Officer Brian Pennings said.

The driver of the Toyota, 23-year-old Sean Harkey of San Diego, suffered a broken arm and a fractured leg. Cooley and his 12-month-old son sustained less serious injuries.

Investigators believe Cooley may have been intoxicated at the time of the accident, Pennings said. The roadway was blocked for about an hour as authorities gathered evidence and hauled off the damaged cars.
