VISTA, Calif. -- A 27-year-old man was behind bars Thursday for allegedly firing several shots in the air during a birthday party attended by several young children in Vista and threatening to shoot his girlfriend in the face, authorities said.Deputies received several reports of gunfire at an apartment at 300 W. Los Angeles Drive around 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, according to San Diego County sheriff's Sgt. Karen Stubkjaer. She said deputies received another report at 11:23 p.m. from a woman who said a man fired a gun at her and pointed the weapon at his girlfriend's face, saying something like, "I have a full clip and one in the chamber. You see how that feels? You want to feel what it's like when it goes off?"
At the time, the woman caller, her husband and 2-year-old child were guests at a birthday party, along with several other families, Stubkjaer said, adding there were six young children present.Deputies later identified the gunman as Craig Fredericks. Stubkjaer said Fredericks, who turned 27 Wednesday, got mad for unknown reasons and confronted his girlfriend on an apartment balcony in front of her 6-year-old son.He then fired several rounds from a handgun into the air, she said, adding that deputies later found seven casings on the ground below the balcony. No one was injured in the gunfire, according to Stubkjaer.Fredericks' girlfriend was uncooperative with deputies, changing her story numerous times during the investigation, Stubkjaer said. When deputies entered Fredericks' apartment, with his consent, they found a loaded handgun, a shotgun, two Airsoft guns and ammunition, Stubkjaer said. He was arrested and booked into the Vista jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, several counts of child endangerment and negligent discharge of a firearm, she said.
