EL CAJON, Calif. -- Another Toyota Prius driver in San Diego claimed his car accelerated on its own Wednesday, but the California Highway Patrol said his story does not add up.10News learned the 2009 Prius is registered to the San Diego County Public Defender's Office, and the driver -- 42-year-old Carl Davis -- is an employee at the office. The car also has a government license plate, according to authorities. The CHP examined the car after Davis claimed it suddenly accelerated on its own while he was driving from Magnolia Avenue to the Interstate 8 onramp.
"He saw the ramp ascending in nature. He was worried about rolling down the hill, so he immediately turned the vehicle to the right," said Brian Pennings of the CHP.Davis told authorities he had to use his emergency brake to stop the car. However, the CHP said Davis claimed the car only accelerated 15 mph to 20 mph, yet he asked to be taken to the hospital for back, neck and shoulder injuries."There is some apparent discrepancies between the physical evidence and his statement," said Pennings."In your experience, is that speed enough to cause the injuries if there was no crash or abrupt stop?" asked 10News' Itica Milanes."There was no abrupt stop," said Pennings.10News contacted the hospital to check on Davis' condition and was told he was not in the hospital.
