UPDATED: 2:28 pm PST March 10, 2010

A moth that damages agriculture products was discovered in a trap at a Bonsall lemon grove, the first time the insect has been discovered in San Diego County, it was announced today.

The discovery of the light brown apple moth prompted the California Department of Food and Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to place additional traps in the area, according to the county.

"Our goal is to determine if there is more than one light brown apple moth in the area," Robert Atkins, the county's agriculture commissioner, said in a statement. "Hopefully, this is a lone stray."

A quarantine will be triggered if a second light brown apple moth is found in the area, according to the county.

The larvae of the light brown apple moth, a native of Australia, is known to feed on more than 2,000 plants and about 250 crops, according to the county. The plants are damaged when caterpillars feed on leaves, buds shoots and fruits causing brown areas on the surface.
