Infant Death Last Fall Ruled Homicide

POSTED: 6:38 pm PST March 8, 2010
UPDATED: 6:43 pm PST March 8, 2010

The death of an infant found unconscious and unresponsive in a baby swing in a Serra Mesa apartment last fall has been ruled a homicide, the county Medical Examiner's Office reported Monday.

A man who was babysitting 3-month-old Aziya Davinger on Oct. 13 made an emergency call early that afternoon to report that she was cold, pale and possibly dead, according to San Diego police.

An autopsy the following day revealed that the baby had suffered a number of unexplained injuries inflicted on various occasions, SDPD Lt. Kevin Rooney said. The postmortem exam determined that she died of infections caused by fractures and blunt-force injuries, he said.

Detectives questioned five adult residents of the Gramercy Drive apartment, according to Rooney. No arrests in the case have been announced.

It was unclear why a ruling on the child's cause of death took five months to be made public.
