Large Waves Pound Coast

POSTED: 4:06 pm PST February 28, 2010
UPDATED: 4:47 pm PST February 28, 2010

The Ocean Beach Pier and the Mission Bay channel were closed Sunday because of high surf, a San Diego lifeguard lieutenant said.

Crystal Pier in Pacific beach remained open despite the large waves.

Waves that topped 10 feet, during high tide, damaged railings along the pier in the morning, Lt. Andy Lerum said.

The pier's reopening depends on how long it takes city crews to repair the damage, Lerum said.

The lieutenant said breakers eased during the afternoon to about 6-8 feet.

However, waves of that height combined with the afternoon low tide created dangerous conditions for boaters in the boulder-lined Mission Bay channel, he said.

The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Advisory until 2 a.m. Monday. Sunday night high tide will be a 5.9 foot tide at 9:26 p.m., slightly less than this morningÆs peak and with a forecast for smaller waves.

The Sudnay morning combination of high tide and big waves caused flooding in Huntington Beach and Seal Beach in Orange County.

There was no flooding in the local low-lying coastal zones of Imperial Beach or Restaurant Row in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.
