School Bus Kills Pedestrian Outside Fallbrook Junior High
Deio Alcala, 38, Pronounced Dead At The Scene

FALLBROOK, Calif. -- A school bus struck and killed a man Friday as he was drawing with chalk on a road in front of his girlfriend's North County home, authorities reported.Deio Alcala, 38, was kneeling in a left-turn lane in the 1700 block of Reche Road when the 25-seat vehicle hit him about 5:45 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol and county Medical Examiner's Office.Alcala "looked up but did not move in time," CHP public affairs Officer Eric Newbury said.The impact knocked him into a Ford Explorer, Newbury said. He died at the scene.The bus driver, who was en route to pick up special-needs students for transport to school, was uninjured, as was the 52-year-old motorist behind the wheel of the SUV.It was unclear why Alcala, a Fallbrook resident, was drawing on the street, Newbury said.
