CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- Security camera video has given Chula Vista police their first glimpse at a group of thieves suspected of stealing at least two ATMs Monday morning. The video showed several men dressed in black outside a Vons grocery store on Telegraph Canyon Road in Chula Vista. The men drove up in a silver Toyota Tundra, and the thieves attached chains from the truck to the glass doors and ripped them down. The men attached the same chains to an ATM near those doors. Fortunately, they were unable to dislodge the machine from its foundation.Police said something unseen by the video scared the thieves off before they did any more damage.Chula Vista Police Department spokesman Bernard Gonzales told 10News the police suspected the same men stole an ATM out of an El Cajon CVS Pharmacy only 30 minutes later. El Cajon Police said someone driving a similar truck backed into the CVS front doors and removed the ATM. The truck, which police believe was stolen, was found later that day, but the money and thieves were gone. The two incidents bring the total ATM thefts and attempted thefts to six so far in 2010. The number is surprising because only seven ATMs were stolen in San Diego County in all of 2009. Eight were taken in 2008.
