Thieves Steal ATM After Failed Attempt Monday Morning

ATM Thieves Believed To Be In Silver Toyota Tundra

POSTED: 7:01 am PST February 22, 2010
UPDATED: 5:46 pm PST February 22, 2010

A truck used in an attempted ATM robbery at a Vons in Chula Vista early Monday is the same vehicle used in the successful robbery of an ATM at a CVS in El Cajon, an El Cajon Sheriff's Dispatcher told 10News.

Authorities are searching for the silver Toyota Tundra used in both incidents. It is believed four masked men are responsible for the crimes.

The Vons at 505 Telegraph Canyon in Chula Vista was damaged in the robbery attempt, which occurred around 5:15 a.m. About 30 minutes later the ATM at the CVS at 790 Jamacha Road was stolen. Monday's theft marks the fourth time in less than a week that thieves have uprooted a cash dispenser in the pre-dawn hours.

On Sunday, thieves made off with an ATM taken from the Ikea store on Fenton Parkway in Mission Valley, according to San Diego police, who also investigated an attempted theft of an ATM from a Bank of America kiosk in Scripps Ranch on Wednesday.

The thieves in the Scripps Ranch case removed the machine from its base but fled without the damaged machine, police said.

National City police said that last Thursday, thieves pried open doors at Plaza Bonita shopping mall and used a chain to uproot an ATM that was about 75 feet inside the mall. They then dragged it through the parking lot until their vehicle was sideswiped by a truck with security personnel inside, causing the ATM to be knocked loose from its tether, police said.

It was not immediately clear whether authorities believe the four cases are related.
