Lawmakers Outraged Over 'Compton Cookout' Frat Party

POSTED: 5:33 pm PST February 18, 2010
UPDATED: 5:37 pm PST February 18, 2010

Lawmakers from Compton responded to the racially themed party thrown by University of California, San Diego students.

In Sacramento Thursday, state Assemblyman Isadore Hall III (D-Compton) spoke out against the "Compton Cookout."

"These acts of racism and sexism will not be tolerated in California or anywhere else in the United States of America, and I stand today with other legislative leaders in publicly condemning those responsible for these acts of hate, and demanding full accountability for their actions," Hall said.

On the Facebook flyer that promoted the event, partygoers were encouraged to dress, speak and act in offensive stereotypes, including bringing watermelon, wearing gold teeth and speaking loudly.

Members of the UCSD fraternity Pi Kappa Alpha have been linked to the event, but Pike president Garron Engstrom said the fraternity was not involved.

UCSD said it has launched an investigation into the off-campus party that took place last weekend. School officials said they would determine if official disciplinary action is warranted.

Hall is demanding the university impose sanctions and expel students once the school finds out who organized the event.
