SAN DIEGO -- A preliminary hearing is scheduled Wednesday for a woman accused of driving under the influence of depressants and killing a single mother of two walking down a Poway street last year.

Becky Marie Anderson, 45, is charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated in the Nov. 23 death of 36-year-old Kristen Ann Bedard.

Deputy District Attorney Ted Minahan alleged that Anderson has two prior DUI convictions from Minnesota, in 1998 and 1999. As a result, she faces 15 years to life in prison if convicted, the prosecutor said.

Anderson was alone in her car when she allegedly swerved into a bicycle lane on southbound Community Road south of Aubrey Street about 7 a.m., killing Bedard.

At Anderson's arraignment, Minahan said Anderson told sheriff's deputies sent to the scene that she was the driver of the car that hit the victim, who was walking north on Community.

Anderson was allegedly under the influence of a controlled substance, namely depressants, when the accident occurred, Minahan said.

At the end of the preliminary hearing, a judge will decide if enough evidence was presented for the defendant to stand trial.
