Neighbor With Baseball Bat Foils Burglary

Man Saw Unfamiliar Jeep, Investigated

POSTED: 4:00 am PST February 9, 2010

Two men were in custody Monday after their plans to burglarize an Encinitas house were foiled by a suspicious neighbor, a sheriff's sergeant said.

A man who lives on Sierra Ridge Drive saw an unfamiliar Jeep occupied by four men park in front of 312 Sierra Ridge Drive around noon Monday, said San Diego County sheriff's Sgt. Thomas Yancey.

The man watched as the Jeep's occupants got out of the vehicle and two of them crossed the street and walked down the side yard of another residence, according to Yancey. At that point, the neighbor armed himself with a baseball bat and opened his garage door, he said.

The two men who had remained with the Jeep saw the neighbor with his bat, prompting one to flee on foot and the other to drive away in the Jeep, Yancey said. The bat-carrying man and another neighbor then went to check on the remaining two suspects and allegedly saw them pulling a screen off a window.

The men pulling off the screen ran off when they saw the two neighbors, Yancey said. At some point, the driver of the Jeep allegedly turned around and picked up one of the three men who had fled on foot.

A third neighbor got the Jeep's license plate number, Yancey said, and deputies pulled over the Jeep on El Camino Real and Garden View Road, arresting two suspects, a short time later. Both were booked into the Vista jail.
