UPDATED: 11:30 am PST February 6, 2010

A three-day manhunt for a man suspected of stabbing a man to death as they argued over a taxicab in Rolando Tuesday has ended with an arrest, San Diego police announced Saturday.

Investigators say Torrance Jones, 33, ran away with his girlfriend after stabbing LaDonte Collins, 22, of San Diego, during a fight over which of themshould use a taxi that arrived at the Ace Budget Motel, 7058 El Cajon Blvd.

Collins died about an hour later in a hospital.

Jones was found Friday afternoon in an apartment in the 1000 block of Eighth Avenue downtown. San Diego police homicide Lt. Kevin Rooney said Criminal Intelligence Unit detectives and agents with the state Bureau of Narcotics Enforcement had searched for Jones for three days.

Jones was booked late Friday night into Central Jail on a charge of first-degree murder, according to county jail records. Arraignment is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Rooney said Collins and two friends got a flat tire and called for a taxicab about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday on 70th Street near El Cajon Boulevard. They walked to the motel to wait. When the taxi arrived, a man and woman came out of the motel and claimed the cab.

The man, identified by police as Jones, allegedly fought with Collins and stabbed him. Rooney said Jones and the woman fled, leaving their belongings behind in the motel room.

A man who was detained after the fight, questioned by homicide investigators, then released, has not been identified.
