SAN DIEGO -- Even small children are in awe of what's coming out of the bay and into the glass case at Point Loma Seafoods. As kids point inside to what is already caught, just feet away, Captain Chuck Taft is preparing outside to taking people out on his boat at H&M Landing so they can see for themselves the migration of the giant squid."People just can't believe how big they are, how wet you can get and how much ink they squirt," said Taft. The normal-size squid found in San Diego is about 5 inches to 6 inches in length. The one in the case at Point Loma Seafood is about 25 pounds, but Taft said they get to be about twice that size."These Humboldt squid get to be about 6-feet tall and can weigh up to 70 pounds," he said. For the past three weeks, Taft said these rare squid have been showing up everywhere."Different currents are going through, different water temperatures. I think it has a lot to do with the La Nina we are having right now," said Taft.Taft said they found a few last year, but now they have come back in force. He said he can catch up to 100 squid a day, but he doesn't now how long the squid will stay in San Diego water this time around but while they are here, he will take advantage and not just for sport."It's a very cost affective way to have calamari," said Taft.
