SDPD Responds To Arrest Of Jets Fan At Playoff Game

The San Diego Police Department is responding to the arrest of a New York Jets fan at the Chargers-Jets playoff game that was caught on tape, 10News reported.

  • YouTube Video: Jets Fan Arrested

In the YouTube video, Jets fan William Carroll was seen cheering for his team and taunting several Charger fans during the game. Moments later, three SDPD officers surrounded Carroll and began pulling him by his arms to take him into custody. Carroll was eventually carried out by police.

"The officer is not really reacting to anything. The only thing you see in that video is the officers attempting to put somebody into custody who doesn't want to be placed into custody," said SDPD Asst. Chief Bob Kanaski.

Carroll, of Mission Viejo, was arrested on charges of being drunk in public and resisting arrest.

"What you don't see in the video is the initial contact of the officers with the individual. They had asked him to walk up to the aisle up to the top to where they could talk to this man. But he refused all three times," said Kanaski.

In the video, several fans defended Carroll and said he was not doing anything.

However, Kanaski said an off-duty police officer was sitting in the section and sent a text message notifying officers that Carroll was drunk and causing problems for the section.

Officers tried to escort Carroll out of his seat, but police said he made a fist and would not put his hands behind his back.

"When the officers went to make the arrests you can see where he is tightened up and he doesn't comply; that would be the delay in the duties," said Kanaski.

San Diego police said they arrested 49 people at the game, and the safety of almost 70,000 people at Qualcomm Stadium for the game was a priority.

Carroll was released from jail and told 10News police only asked him once to go with them. When he refused, he said the officers pushed him.

Carroll also said he was not drunk and feels insulted about the way he was treated.
