SAN DIEGO -- San Diego City Councilman Michael Zucchet has reportedly set up a campaign committee for the 2006 election to help raise money for his legal defense in the federal grand jury investigation, 10News reported.
The committee was reportedly established just two days after the FBI raided the offices of Zucchet and fellow council members Charles Lewis and Ralph Inzunza, along with strip clubs in San Diego and Las Vegas.A co-writer of the state political reform act said it is legal under state law for council members to use campaign funds to mount a defense, 10News reported.Law enforcement sources in San Diego said the probe centers on whether public officials were bribed with tens of thousands of dollars in attempts to change city laws regulating adult entertainment business.Lewis, Inzunza and Zucchet have denied any wrongdoing.Meantime, the federal grand jury resumes its investigation to determine if any of the council members should be indicted. Both Lewis' and Inzunza's chief of staffs were seen going into the courtroom Friday morning. They would not talk with reporters, 10News reported.
