UPDATED: 5:10 pm PST January 6, 2010

Authorities Wednesday released the name of a youth who died about 45 minutes shy of his 17th birthday, when the car he was riding in veered out of control and plunged off an elevated Mission Valley freeway interchange.

Ray Castro of City Heights was a backseat passenger in a 1993 Toyota Corolla that overturned on the connector between northbound Interstate 15 and Interstate 8 shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday, according to the county Medical Examiner's Office.

The boy, who would have turned 17 Wednesday, was ejected from the sedan. Medics took him to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead from blunt-force torso injuries about 11:15 p.m.

Several other people were seriously injured in the crash, according to the California Highway Patrol. The cause of the accident was under investigation.
