SAN DIEGO -- A federal grand jury this week resumes examining whether to indict San Diego City Council members and others on bribery, extortion and conspiracy charges after hearing testimony from a city councilor and staffers, 10News reported.
City Councilman Jim Madaffer appeared before the grand jury, as did Genevive DePerio and Lance Witmondt, aides to council members. DePerio works for Councilman Charles Lewis and Witmondt is chief of staff to Council Chairman Brian Maienschein. "I will not reveal what I was asked or what I answered before the grand jury," Madaffer said in a statement. "I believe the public will know more from the U.S. Attorney's Office in due time." The closed grand jury proceedings started two days after the FBI and San Diego police served search warrants at the offices of Councilmen Michael Zucchet, Lewis and Ralph Inzunza, and at strip clubs in San Diego and Las Vegas owned by Michael Galardi. According to a warrant, the FBI is probing a host of crimes, including bribery of a City Council member, bribery of a police officer, wire fraud, extortion, conspiracy and interstate travel to aid racketeering. The two-year investigation involved wiretaps, surveillance and listening devices in council offices. Councilwoman Toni Atkins also has been summoned before the grand jury, according to 10News.
