SAN DIEGO -- With the New Year, new laws go into effect in the city of San Diego. One law in particular isn't new, but now applies to everyone when it comes to recycling. The official term for the material to be recycled is bulk mail, though most call it junk mail.It was not long ago at the Colima Linda apartments that flyers and announcements ended up in the trash. Not anymore. The apartment complex has gone out of its way to make recycling easier by handing out tote bags to remind residents to recycle.
The complex went even further, adding recycle bins in convenient locations for residents, such as next to the mailbox. The recycling effort applies to virtually everyone and everything in the city of San Diego, including special events. The idea behind the law is to stretch the time the city can use the Miramar landfill which is nearing capacity. The program at the Colima Linda apartment complex got started months ago, but is picking up momentum. At this complex alone, as much as 50 percent of its trash has been diverted into recycling. Those who ignore warnings can face fines of up to a thousand dollars.
