SAN DIEGO -- A local elderly woman's Christmas Day ambulance ride was a welcome sight for her family, 10News reported.Rosie Abalos, 73, was wheeled out of the hospital on Friday and was taken home because her extensive health problems don't allow for a ride in a regular car.Abalos has not been home for Christmas in several years, but thanks to an annual Christmas program from San Diego Medical Services she was able to visit her family in Spring Valley."I'm finally home. It was a wonderful ride and it was fast," Abalos said. She is now home with family in her favorite chair, with praise for the ambulance crew who took her home."Sweetest guys I've ever had take me anyplace," said Abalos.Abalos' family learned last week she would be coming home for Christmas dinner."My brother-in-law called me and said, 'They're gonna bring mom' and I said, 'Sure,'" said Abalos' daughter-in-law Carmen Abalos. Two of Rosie Abalos' sons could not be at the home because one is serving in Iraq and the other, Ron Abalos, lives in Wisconsin. However, Ron Abalos did manage to make an appearance via Skype.Whether it's through a computer screen or in the flesh, Rosie Abalos is surrounded with love."It's very special to us that she is here," said Carmen Abalos.Rosie Abalos said, "I'm with my family and having a wonderful time."The ambulance will return to pick up Abalos and she will no doubt leave with that certain glow that only comes from being home for the holidays.San Diego Medical Services has donated rides home for patients like Abalos for the past eight years.
