A 71-year-old man was seriously injured when he was struck by a sports utility vehicle as he attempted to cross a Rancho Penasquitos street at mid-block, police said Friday.

The pedestrian was pushing a shopping cart across the 12000 block of Rancho Penasquitos Boulevard, just west of the Interstate 15, around 5:20 p.m. Thursday when he stepped in front of a Toyota sports utility vehicle and was hit, said San Diego police officer David Stafford.

The pedestrian, whose name was not immediately available, was taken to the hospital for serious injuries including a broken ankle, Stafford said. He is expected to survive.

The 46-year-old driver was not injured. No arrests were made, he said.
