Elderly Man Crossing Street Struck By SUV

SAN DIEGO -- A 71-year-old man was seriously injured when he was struck by a sports utility vehicle as he attempted to cross a Rancho Penasquitos street at mid-block, police said Friday.The pedestrian was pushing a shopping cart across the 12000 block of Rancho Penasquitos Boulevard, just west of the Interstate 15, around 5:20 p.m. Thursday when he stepped in front of a Toyota sports utility vehicle and was hit, said San Diego police officer David Stafford.The pedestrian, whose name was not immediately available, was taken to the hospital for serious injuries including a broken ankle, Stafford said. He is expected to survive.The 46-year-old driver was not injured. No arrests were made, he said.
