Local Family Fights To Keep Killer In Prison

Robert Watson Convicted For 1989 Death Of Clifford Tenney

An Escondido family is asking Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to deny parole for a man that brutally killed their brother in Valley Center 20 years ago, 10News reported.

Brenda Tenney Quiroz is fighting to make sure her brother's killer is not released from prison. It is a battle she and her family have been fighting for the past two decades.

"It's been horrific. It's been awful. It takes a little while to get over it after each parole hearing, and you know it's going to come up again before you know it. It's usually every three years," said Quiroz.

In 2007, Robert Watson was denied parole for bludgeoning and fatally shooting Clifford Tenney in 1989. The Board of Parole Hearings told 10News Watson appealed the decision, and the 4th Appellate Court ordered the board to consider his parole based only on new conduct since his last hearing.

This past October, the BPH recommended parole for Watson, and in February Schwarzenegger will have 30 days to review the hearing if he chooses to do so.

Quiroz and her family are writing to Schwarzenegger to make sure Watson is not released.

"When you take a life, you give up your own," said Quiroz.

Quiroz said her brother's face was smashed in and he had several fractures to his head. She said he was buried under a pile of boards in a trailer.

"The DA had asked him why he had went to such great lengths, why didn't he stop. His reply was, 'He wouldn't die,'" said Quiroz.

Family members said Watson should not be released because they believe he is a threat to the community and has yet to show any remorse.

"He's not discussing anything that he did because he feels he can always justify what he does, and he still hasn't come to grips with what he did was wrong," said Quiroz.
