SAN DIEGO -- The chances of getting swine flu in San Diego County do not depend on a person's home location, according to research done by 10News and numbers from the San Diego County Department of Health and Human Services.According to numbers obtained from the county's health department, Valley Center recorded the highest number of people hospitalized with H1N1 at 5.1 cases out of 10,000 people. San Marcos was right behind with 5.1 cases. Health officials said breaking down the H1N1 cases by ZIP code is not very accurate.By ethnic groups, Hispanics, whites and African-Americans -- in that order -- have the most hospitalizations, county health officials said.
"Where one lives is not an indicator for risk of becoming infected with the H1N1. The virus is widespread throughout the community," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, Public Health Officer with San Diego County.County numbers showed San Marcos with the second-highest number of H1N1 cases, but nearby Vista had one of the lowest number of swine flu cases. Those initially not considered to be high-risk -- working-class adults age 30 to 55 -- actually account for two-thirds of the deaths associated with H1N1.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the regular seasonal flu kills about 36,000 people every year, and most of them are over age 65. It is one reason why the county is opening up vaccinations to every one."People are being hospitalized. We are reporting deaths and hospitalizations on a weekly basis. There is still a threat to individuals," said Wooten.Wooten said she expects the threat to last well into January and early February. For people without pre-existing medical conditions, the swine flu is relatively mild, health officials said.As of November, one in 6 Americans have come down with the H1N1 virus, and more than 200,000 have been hospitalized.
