OCEANSIDE, Calif. -- A move to recall Oceanside City Councilman Jerome Kern was rejected by voters Tuesday. The no side received 63 percent of the votes, with all 60 precincts reporting, according to unofficial results released by the San Diego County Registrar of Voters. Recall backers claimed Kern is too close with developers and wants to cut fire and police budgets. Kern called the recall effort a union power grab in advance of labor negotiations. Kern, 57, was elected to the Oceanside City Council in November 2006. Chuck Lowery led the field of three candidates seeking to replace Kern if the recall was successful with 60 percent of the vote. The recall election is expected to cost Oceanside about $500,000.
