JAMUL, Calif. -- Four teenagers are in a local hospital after a car crash involving underage drinking -- the sixth such incident in San Diego County the last few months. An 18-year-old El Cajon man is facing felony DUI charges after Monday evening crash on Highway 94 in Jamul. The crash occurred around 11 p.m. on a curve just west of Lyons Valley Road, and the California Highway Patrol said officers found opened beer bottles in the Infiniti's wreckage. The driver, Caleb Parfet, was the least seriously injured in the crash. He’s out of the hospital and in jail. His four teenage passengers, who were all wearing seatbelts, are all in the hospital recovering from their injuries. On Tuesday, Parfet's mother, Stephanie, spoke to 10News and she said her son's main concern is for the passengers."We really hope that the kids are OK, and that uh, Caleb is very, very remorseful and concerned about their well being,” said Stephanie Parfet.“Many parents are afraid of their kids. They’re afraid of lowering the boom. They’re afraid of having consequences for actions. They’re afraid of somehow hurting their child’s self-esteem”, said Nancy Knott, a teen addiction counselor at Scripps La Jolla’s McDonald Center.Knott said it’s critical parents get in control of the situation.“You don’t need to be the popular parent. In fact, I would strongly advise you be the very unpopular parent. We don’t get a lot of kids into treatment with unpopular parents,” said Knott.Stephanie Parfet agreed, and said, “Parents, you really, really, really need to know what’s going on with your kids and realize that because they’re young they don’t think things through."The CHP said Caleb Parfet will face felony DUI charges.
