Dozens Still Without Power After Monday's Storm

Some three dozen of the roughly 92,000 addresses that lost electrical service during Monday's punishing storm in San Diego County were still powerless as of early Wednesday, utility officials reported.

Heavy winds whipped up by the blustery weather toppled power poles and downed transmission lines, causing 120 different areas throughout the county to be without power, according to San Diego Gas & Electric.

At the height of the storm, around 44,000 homes and businesses were simultaneously without power, SDG&E spokeswoman Jennifer Ramp said. About 850 addresses remained offline as of late Tuesday afternoon, Ramp added.

As of 3 a.m., three addresses in the Julian area, another three in central San Diego and 28 in the East County remained blacked out, according to SDG&E's Web site. The utility estimated power would be restored to all by noon.

At least 10 utility poles, including five in Borrego Springs, fell among strong wind gusts Monday.

The howling winds and flying debris downed a total of about 3.5 miles of power lines around the county, the spokeswoman said.

The utility company kept its district operations centers open throughout the night to meet the demand, and 60 repair crews worked around the clock to return electrical service to the blacked-out areas, according to Ramp.
