SAN DIEGO -- The reopening of the Old Globe Theatre, including the addition of new buildings, was made possible in this economy thanks to generous donations, 10News reported.Construction on the Old Globe Theatre was a large part of a $75 million campaign to upgrade it before its 75th anniversary. The Old Globe has long been a home for local performing arts.
"(It is) an icon, if you will, a landmark of San Diego, and throughout the theatre industry for generations. We are now the 6th largest theatre in the U.S.," said Old Globe Theatre Executive Director Lou Spisto. The Conrad Preby's Theatre Center has a new look thanks to the upgrade. A four-story building with a 250-seat theatre and a place for educational programs is in place.Spisto said the new building will be completed next summer. He said the Old Globe is one of the most active theatres in the country."We give 15 productions a year. Over 250,000 and reaching 300,000 people a year attend our performances," said Spisto.Spisto said it was time for an upgrade for the Old Globe, and after 18 months of construction the new building is finally ready and will continue to play a role in San Diego's culture."You'll remember what you see here for many, many years to come," said Spisto.A two-week run of the musical "I Do, I Do" starts Friday night. On Saturday, the Old Globe is hosting an open house for an up-close look at the new complex.
