PB Man: Car Has Been Towed Twice From Front Of Home

POSTED: 6:43 pm PST December 4, 2009
UPDATED: 8:50 pm PST December 4, 2009

A Pacific Beach man told 10News his car has been towed away twice from right outside his home.

While police said it is considered an abandoned car, Aaron Crayford said that is not true.

Crayford has lived in Pacific Beach for five months. He does not have a parking spot so he has to park his red Honda Civic on the street.

He went out of town for Thanksgiving, but when he arrived home Thursday his car was not there.

"I have never experienced a city where they will tow you for parking in front of your house," said Crayford, who also told 10News this was the second time his car was towed.

"It seems ridiculous to me that they think a car is abandoned if they towed it at one time and it's back in the same place, and then I notified an officer while he towed it the first time that it's not an abandoned vehicle," added Crayford.

The first time his car was towed, Crayford paid $933 to get his car back from the tow yard.

"It seems like I am being punished for no reason," said Crayford.

According to California law, a car cannot be parked on the street for more than 72 hours. San Diego police said they put notices on cars about to be towed as a courtesy, but they are not required to do so for this type of violation.

Crayford said he works from home and owns two cars. Since he does not have a parking spot, the street is his only option, and he said something needs to be done so this doesn't happen to anyone else.

"Maybe the city should create a parking permit system for people who are residents, and I think that would be a good way to tell if cars are abandoned or not," said Crayford.

Crayford's fee to take the car out of the tow yard Friday was $367.

He said he does not have the money right now, so he is not sure what he is going to do.
